The Mall, was designed by Sir Aston Webb as part of a grand memorial to Queen Victoria. It extends from Admiralty Arch, across St James’s Park to the Victoria Memorial. This route is used by the cavalcades and motorcades of visiting heads of state, and by the royal family on state occasions, such as the annual Trooping the Colour.

Changing of the Guard is a formal ceremony where the current soldiers guarding Buckingham Palace are changed. The ceremony is free to watch.

The Queen’s Guard are dressed in traditional red tunics with bearskin hats and guard Buckingham Palace. Made up of soldiers on active duty from the Household Division’s Foot Guards.

The Buckingham Palace Old Guard forms in the palace’s forecourt from 10.30am and is joined by the St James’s Palace Old Guard at around 10.45am. The New Guard then arrives from Wellington Barracks and takes over the responsibilities of the Old Guard in a formal ceremony accompanied by music.

The Changing of the Guard spans three locations Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace and Wellington Barracks and there is no single spot where you can see the entire Guard Mount.
