The English Riviera
Beautiful coasts and National Parks
Devon is a county of England, situated between the Bristol Channel to the north and the English Channel in the south. It is bounded by Cornwall to the west, Somerset to the north-east and Dorset to the east. Exeter is the county town. Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks attract many visitors. Devon’s coasts, including the resort towns along the south coast are known collectively as the English Riviera.
Torquay and Paignton are the main seaside resorts of Devon’s south coast. Dartmouth, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, and Totnes are situated on the rolling hills of the area. East Devon includes Exmouth and the Georgian town of Sidmouth. Exmouth marks the western end of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Plymouth is a port city on the south coast of Devon, approximately 37 miles south-west of Exeter and 190 miles south-west of London. It is bordered by Cornwall to the west and south-west.
North Devon’s major towns include Barnstaple, Great Torrington, Bideford and Ilfracombe. Devon’s Exmoor coast has the highest cliffs in southern Britain. The beaches of Bideford Bay (Woolacombe, Saunton, Westward Ho! and Croyde), along with parts of North Cornwall and South Wales, are the main centres of surfing in Britain.
Exeter Airport (IATA: EXT, ICAO: EGTE), is a popular destination with tourists to Devon and Cornwall. The airport offers FBO facilities too.
For those wanting a literary tour, Devon is an inspiration. Poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Ted Hughes, and writers Agatha Christie and William Trevor lived in Devon.
