The term ‘West End’ was first used in the early 19th century to describe fashionable areas to the west of Charing Cross. The West End covers parts of the boroughs of Westminster and Camden. While the City of London is the main business and financial district in London, the West End is the main commercial and entertainment centre of the city
“There’s something about doing theatre in London – it sinks a little bit deeper into your soul as an actor. It’s something about the tradition of theatre, about performing on the West End stage.”
Theatreland
Along with Broadway theatre, West End theatre is usually considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world. Seeing a West End show is a popular tourist activity in London.
There are a total of 38 theatres in the West End. The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, which opened in May 1663, is the oldest theatre in London. The Savoy Theatre was built as a showcase for the popular series of comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, in 1881 became the first building to be entirely lit by electricity.

“Every movie I get involved with I get involved in as big a level as I possibly can, but this has been a very much more personal journey for me, so bringing it here tonight there’s a sense of relief, there’s a sense of just amazement that got here… because it’s been a struggle. But this is a good way to launch it and there couldn’t be a better way of celebrating this movie than bringing it to the West End.”
